In A Eandefull of Pleasant DeKtes, 1584, there is "A proper sonet, wherein the lover dolefully sheweth his grief .to hia love and requireth pity," which is also, to the tune of Row well, ye mariners.
The tune is printed in Thomas Robinson's Schoole of Mustek, fol., 1603, and in every edition of The Dancing Master that I have seen, from the first, dated 1651, to the eighteenth, 1725.
Not having the original words, a few verses from the "Lamentation from Rome," above mentioned, are given as a specimen of the merry political ballad of those days. It is the Song of a fly buzzing about the Pope's nose. The Pope and his court are supposed to be greatly disconcerted at the news of the defeat of the rebels in Northumberland.
I have added the old burden over the music, feeling no doubt of its having been sung to this part of the tune.
